What do I need to use News.me?

To use the News.me application, you will need an iPad and a Twitter account. To receive the News.me daily email, you'll need a Twitter account and (you guessed it) an email account.

How much does News.me cost?

It doesn't! It's free!

How can I start using the News.me app?

You'll need to download the application from the Apple App Store. You can do so directly from your iPad, or download it to your computer and then sync your iPad.

What's the connection to Twitter?

News.me uses your Twitter account as a starting point to determine which news articles and which people you are most likely to find interesting. If you don't have a Twitter account yet, it's easy to set up one at twitter.com. You don't have to be a regular user of Twitter, or already "follow" people on Twitter, to get some of the benefits of News.me. (Because the News.me daily email is based exclusively on who you follow on Twitter, you'll need to follow at least a few people in order for the email to contain useful content.)

What do I see when I run News.me?

News.me shows you a "stream" of stories that you are likely to find interesting. This is the news customized for you. It also shows you a "User Dock" – a bar of photos of other people who are also News.me users. Tap on a user in the User Dock to you to see that user's stream – the news that is most likely to be interesting to that person. Sometimes your interests and theirs will overlap, and you'll see similar stories; other times, though, you'll get a completely different view of the news, seen through someone else's eyes.

What am I seeing when I view my own stream?

Your stream contains content from the most interesting links that people you follow on Twitter have recently shared. By default, News.me filters your content so that you get only the best stories. This content is chosen based on a combination of popularity and what you have read or shared in the past. (Note that if you don't yet have a Twitter account and set one up to use News.me, your stream will be empty. But you will be able to see interesting articles in the streams of other users.)

Tell me more about "peeking" at stories in my stream.

Sometimes you want to read a little more of a story, but you don't want to leave your stream. If you "unpinch" any story in your stream, it will expand to allow you to read more of the story.

Can I get unfiltered content in my stream?

Yes, you can! If you don't want us to filter your stream for you, tap on the Settings button in the app toolbar, go to Reading Options, and turn off "Filtered for me." This change will show you all the articles that appear in your Twitter stream, irrespective of their popularity or perceived relevance to your interests.

What am I seeing when I view someone else's News.me stream?

News.me is unique in that it allows you to see what other people are reading, giving you new perspectives on the news. People choose who they follow on Twitter based on their own unique set of interests, and with News.me you can see what their curated view of the world looks like. When you select someone else's stream (by tapping on his or her avatar at the top of the app), you will see the most popular or interesting news stories that are being shared by all of the people he or she follows on Twitter.

How do I switch between Web and Streamlined view?

Like some other web browsers (such as Apple's Safari), News.me supports two ways to read articles: a Web view (which shows each article in full fidelity) and a Streamlined view (which shows only text and selected images). When you first run the app, you'll select which reading mode you want to use as your default.

If you use Streamlined view as your default, you can switch to Web View at any time by selecting the Safari button from the story toolbar. Tap the back button to return to Streamlined view.

If you use Web View as your default, you'll need to turn on Streamlined mode in Settings / Reading Options to see a particular story in Streamlined mode.

There are people I follow on Twitter, but I can't see their streams in the News.me app. Why?

News.me allows you to see the stream of anyone you follow on Twitter who is also a News.me user. We only allow you to see other News.me users to ensure that anyone can opt out of having other people view their stream. That's to protect our users' privacy. If you want to see what your friends are reading, invite them to start using News.me! You can send an invitation email right from the app (in Settings > General).

There are people I don't follow on Twitter who I do see in News.me. Why?

In addition to people you follow, News.me offers a small selection of Featured Users who have made their streams available to everyone. These featured users have been carefully selected because we think they are interesting people whose streams provide compelling perspectives on the news. If you're new to Twitter, you'll start in News.me following only these Featured Users. (Over time, you'll discover Twitter users who seem interesting to you; you can sign up to follow them from the app and then, if they're also News.me users, you'll see their customized stream as well.)

I don't want people to see my stream. Can I turn this off?

Yes, you can. Tap on the Settings button, go to Account Settings, and turn on "Hide my stream."

How can I save a story to read later?

There are two ways to save a story for later. From the stream, you can swipe any story to flip it over, and then tap the bookmark button to save it. From the story view, you can also tap on the bookmark button in the story toolbar at the top of the screen. This story will be saved to your "e;Reading List"e;; you'll be able to read it on your iPad at any time, including times when you don't have Internet access.

News.me also has native support for Instapaper. If you have an Instapaper account, you can save articles directly to Instapaper, to read later on the web or within the Instapaper app on your iPad or iPhone.

How do I view my Reading List?

From the stream view, tap the bookmark button in the app toolbar to view your Reading List.

Can I save stories to read later from my browser or a Twitter client?

Yes, you can! Tap on the Settings button in the app toolbar, go to Reading Options and turn on "Import Twitter faves." Now anything you favorite on Twitter will show up in your News.me Reading List.

How do I share a story from News.me?

When you are viewing a story, tap on the Share button in the story toolbar and choose how you want to share the story. You can share stories through Twitter, Facebook, or email; or you can save the story to your Instapaper account.

How can I hide or reorder the people that I see in the User Dock?

Tap and hold a person's profile picture in the User Dock and drag it right or left to reorder people. To hide someone from your User Dock, go to Settings > Add/Remove People.

Is News.me available on other platforms?

For now, News.me is only available as an iPad app and as a daily email.
